Anthony Kim defied odds and fired off 6 birdies, an eagle and a lone bogey to shoot a field leading 7 under par in the final round of the 2010 Masters to finish in 3rd place behind Lee Westwood and tournament winner Phil Mickelson.

AK shot a 34 on the front 9 and a 31 on the back. He went birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie on the 13-16 holes to pull within 1 of Mickelson. Third place netted AK $510,000.00 and 210 FedEx Cup points. Kim is now just 254 points behind FedEx Cup points leader Ernie Els.

THE HONDA CLASSIC: Transcript archive

PHIL STAMBAUGH: Final round 67, and second place finish, your best since the ’09 Mercedes-Benz Championship. Very nice tournament. You shoot 67 today and rallied back from yesterday. Maybe a few thoughts about your round and how you played overall.

ANTHONY KIM: It was a good week. I’m excited with the progress going into next week, and I think I’m just trying to peak for the majors this year, and obviously I want to play well every week. But the Masters is the tournament I’m looking forward to.

So I’m playing well, I’m thinking well, I have a good attitude and hopefully I can keep practicing hard and keep improving.

Q. What are you most happy with, the progress you’ve made from last year?

ANTHONY KIM: My attitude’s a lot better. I really want to — yesterday I wanted to break every club in the bag, but then I wouldn’t have had a set to play with today, so I’m glad that I didn’t. Just try to keep a positive attitude, and once that happens, I’m going to play good golf.

Q. When you wanted to break every club in the set yesterday, what was different about your reaction now, as opposed to other times?

ANTHONY KIM: When they did break? No, I just laughed it off. You’ve got to putt things in perspective and unfortunately last year I was injured and had to deal with some bad golf, a bad attitude and lack of practice.

So I know I’m putting in the time, and good golf will come, because I know it that I have the ability to do it. It’s just a matter of going out and doing it now.

PHIL STAMBAUGH: Can you take us through the day? What was your mind-set starting out?

ANTHONY KIM: Well, I got off to a quick start today. First hole, ten, 15 feet, made it.

3, I 2-putted from a good ways away, and 4, hit it to about a foot. So got off to a quick start.

13 and 14 were a couple good birdies to put myself back in there. I made a long one on 14, and just let one slide by on 15, which was unfortunate.

You know, the Bear Trap, I guess 17 got me again this year, and played that 4-over it looks like. I guess next year I’ll try to do a better job on that hole.

Seattle Post

Lafayette Hill, PA (Sports Network) – Anthony Kim made the first hole-in-one in the 11-year history of the Exelon Invitational on Monday, guiding himself and Jim Furyk to a 3 & 2 victory over Kenny Perry and Paul Casey.

Kim holed his 212-yard tee shot at No. 14 with a five-iron, giving his team a 3-up advantage with four holes to play. He said it was the ninth ace of his career.

“I didn’t see it go in,” said Kim. “I saw the reaction of the crowd and knew it was good.”

The one-day event is hosted by Furyk and held — fittingly for Kim — at the Ace Club in suburban Philadelphia. The Ryder Cup-style fourball tournament raised nearly $200,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia, Furyk said.

Kim’s hole-in-one may also be the last in tournament history.

Exelon, which has sponsored the event since it began in 1999, is cutting back expenses in the difficult economy, Furyk said. He said the tournament, which draws top players every year, won’t be held in 2010.

“We’re hoping to come back in the future,” said Furyk.

The players kept the mood light while birdies were made at 11 of the first 13 holes.

Furyk and Casey were especially hot, combining for seven birdies on the first nine holes. Furyk’s fourth birdie putt on the front side, a five-footer at No. 9, gave himself and Kim a 2-up lead.

Perry didn’t make birdie until the 10th, when he holed an 18-foot putt to cut his and Casey’s deficit to 1-down. They also made birdie at the next hole to square the match.

Kim put his team ahead again with a 10-footer for birdie at the 12th, set up by a soft six-iron into the green.

After rolling a birdie putt well past the hole on 13, Kim played to the supportive gallery, which was reacting to a loud noise coming from the greenside pond.

“That frog is laughing at me,” he said.

Furyk rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt on the hole to give his team its second 2-up advantage of the day. They moved a commanding 3-up on Kim’s ace at the 14th.

WORLD No 11 Anthony Kim may have failed to live up to his favourite’s tag but the Korean-American is well pleased with his Maybank Malaysian Open maiden outing.
In fact, Kim hopes to comeback for another crack at the event.

Kim signed off his outing at the Saujana Golf and Country Club with a bogey-free final round of five-under 67 for a total aggregate of seven-under 281 to tie for 33rd.

However, it would have been a different story if not for his disastrous opening round of 78 where he struggled on the slower greens.

But all credit to him for not giving up.
Kim quickly learnt how to tackle the greens and his second round seven-under 65 helped him make the cut at one-under.

“I am disappointed I didn’t play better this week but all in all, I hung in there tough and that’s really all that I could ask for. I gave it all I had,” said Kim yesterday.

“Nobody wants to finish wherever I did. Everybody wants to win the tournament. I did everything I could. I tried my best but it just did not happen.”

Kim, 24, is considered one of the hottest golfers in the world today and showed this by winning two US PGA Tour titles lat year.

He added: “The heat was not that bad. The weather is fine and the golf course is obviously yielding some good shots. I just did not play well enough or hole enough putts.”

Overall, Kim said, he enjoyed his stay and golf in Malaysia.

“I managed to get into town yesterday (Saturday) and met some wonderful people. I was excited to be here and, hopefully, I can get to come back,” he added.

Anthony Kim played a near flawless final round at Kapalua today, to finish in a tie for second with Davis Love III.

Kim went low, shooting a final round 67 to move him two spots up the leaderboard. But nobody could catch Geoff Ogilvy who shot a final round 68 to finish 6 shots ahead of the pack—24 under for the tournament.

AK nearly finished the tournament with an albatross on the par 5 18th. His 273 yard shot came to rest inches from the cup for an easy kick-in eagle. Watch the amazing shot.
